George Mason: 1932-1952, 350 apps, 8 goals

GEORGE MASON played his early football with Birmingham side, Redhill Amateurs.

Harry Storer pinched him from under the noses of Villa and Birmingham and it was one of his shrewdest moves.

George emerged as an outstanding centre-half and captain, skippering the side to the Division 3 South Championship in 1936.

Injury however caused him to miss the vital final game against Torquay and the tension was so great he had to leave the ground and go for a walk around Gosford Green.

The next three seasons were Mason's golden years and Storer resisted many offers for his service from bigger clubs.

In another era he would have certainly been capped by England.

The war cut across George's career but he did become City's first England international, albeit in two unofficial wartime internationals.

After the war he was still a regular for four years but time eventually caught up and he was given a free transfer in 1952.

After a spell with Nuneaton Borough, he became a publican and later worked at Jaguar before retiring in 1978.

Older fans will always remember his unstinting loyalty to Coventry City over a 21-year period and but for the war he could have made over 600 appearances for the club.
